Youth/Junior Rowing and Information for parents
If you (or your son/daughter) is between the age of 11 and 16 years old and would like to try rowing, please contact our junior rowing coordinator Jo Middleton by email - juniors@weymouthrowingclub.com or use the Homepage link to send an enquiry. Gig Rowing is a popular and one of the fastest growing sporting activities in this country, it is sociable and good for all round fitness. There are a lot of opportunities to progress within the club. Some of our junior members go on to join our adult crews and compete for the club in The World Championships, held in the Isles of Scilly in April or early May each year. Some just enjoy social rowing or rowing with mixed crews.
New junior rowers are welcome every weekend, so come on down if you want to try it out. Your first session is free and there is a small charge for subsequent rowing sessions and you can become a Junior Club Member for £15 a year. Why not bring a friend or two, the more the merrier!
Junior rowing sessions are led by experienced coxons and coaches who are DBS checked. A safety boat always accompanies junior rowing crews if they are rowing outside the harbour entrance in Weymouth Bay. Lifejackets are compulsory for junior rowers and provided by Weymouth Rowing Club. General rowing technique is taught on all of our training sessions. Once we are confident that you are rowing safely it is possible to enter competitions/regattas.
What to wear? Comfortable trousers (leggings/jogging bottoms/shorts) but not jeans are ideal. It is also best to wear layers,a sports vest, T Shirt, hoody or fleece. Layers can be taken off as you warm up during a row. A lightweight rain jacket is a good idea and you should wear trainers on your feet, preferably old trainers. Water is essential as you will get thirsty and will need to rehydrate.
It is not advisable to bring a mobile phone (they have been lost overboard in the past) but if you need to bring one with you make sure it is safe in a small rucksack or waterproof drybag and do not use it during your rowing session.
