Return of the World Gig Racing Championships

Posted by Bree Campbell on 1 March 2022

Weymouth Rowing Club will be sending 2 ladies crews to complete in the main racing and will also enter 2 crews in the Ladies Vets/Supervets event which takes place on Friday 29th April.  The mens squad will enter one crew in the main event and also compete in the Vets/Supervets mens race.  This no ordinary regatta.  Racing takes places from island to island and there can be over a 100 gigs on the start line jostling for a start good position and keeping it no matter what the wind, tide and swell dictates!  For spectators it is a fabulous event to watch and local boats offer the opportunity to follow the races on the water.  Competing Gig Clubs come from all over the UK - this fast growing sport has spread from the South West to Wales and even London has a Gig Club (The London Cornish).  The Dutch, in their recognisable orange kit, are keen attendees and the prescence of other international clubs is growing each year.

Since Covid restrictions have easd, training has been stepped up in ernest.  Crews not only train hard on the water but also on ergos (rowing machines) and in gyms.

We'll be keeping you posted on this and other forthcoming events, including The Three Rivers Race at Caradon which takes place 12th March 2022.
